Road Trip 2010

Howdy!!!

Since Karissa's been the only one blogging on this site, I figured it's time I start. What better topic to blog about than vacation. I mean, who doesn't enjoy vacations? I certainly do!

Karissa was nice enough to let me leave town for a few days with my good friends Andy and Michael (aka "Bass"). We decided to plan a road trip to the great Midwestern cities of Kansas City and St. Louis. The main reason for this trip was to take part in the great game of baseball by attending a couple of games at the famous Kauffman Stadium and the "New" Busch Stadium.

My trip started out on a Friday in the fabulous city of Denton, home of the UNT Mean Green! I was able to catch up with some old friends while there, and I even got to see the new UNT football stadium currently under construction. This thing is going to be fantastic! Karissa and I will be there for sure in 2011 when it officially opens. We'll see if I can convince her to buy one of the suites...;) I was also able to play a quick round of golf with Andy in the afternoon. I recently took up the game when I got a set of clubs for Christmas. I am still quite horrible, but I think I'm making strides in the right direction.

On Saturday; Andy, Bass and I left for Kansas City. We planned on an 8 hour drive there, just enough time to make it to the K before the first pitch. Even though the Kansas City Royals stink, and that it was 'hot as all get out', I was quite impressed with the Royals' fans. They came out in droves to support the team, tailgaited like crazy, and filled up the stadium quite nicely. The KC Stadium was renovated a couple of years ago; wow, what a facelift. It's quite an experience to see a game there, one of my favorites in fact. I recommend a trip there anytime you can go. The game was a back and forth affair, with the Oakland A's winning at the end. Afterwards, we went to a "hole-in-the-wall" place for some good ole' KC BBQ. After scarfing down a pulled pork sandwich, the boys and I headed back to the hotel for some shut eye.

After a quick night's sleep, we left Kansas City early Sunday AM destined for St. Louis to see a game between the Cardinals and Dodgers. It was an early afternoon first pitch at 1:05 PM at Busch Stadium. Let me tell you, this stadium has all the panache you need to enjoy a baseball game. Great sightlines, rum and cokes at the concession stands, and some of the friendliest ushers I've seen at an MLB game. After watching a game there, I can say with all certainty that is my favorite stadium in the major leagues. The fans are fantastic! In the bottom of the 8th inning, Albert Pujols (who had been sitting out the game) got out of the duguout to pinch hit. As soon as his right foot stepped out of the dugout, all 40,000 fans in attendance stood on their feet and cheered as if a home run was hit. This was before the PA announcer officially said Pujols was coming up to bat. The fans just knew what was going on without having to watch a video board or hear an announcement. Quite an experience...the fans and the city skyline is what made that my favorite place for baseball. In the end, the Cardinals came back from a 4-0 deficit to win in walk-off fashion.

On our way back to Texas, we took a brief detour to Fayeteville, Ark. Now, most people would say, "Why would you want to go TOO Arkansas?" Well, we wanted to check out UA's Razorback Stadium or course.

After the quick stop, we made our way back through Arkansas and Oklahoma to Denton, TX. We spent 23 total hours in the car over a 60 hour trip, but it was worth every second of it. There's nothing quite like a road trip, baseball and great friends!!!
